Borya Shapshalova aka BoryaXYZ
Artist CV and Bio
Borya Shapshalova (b. 1989, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria), aka BoryaXYZ, is a Sofia-based intermedia artist working across abstract digital painting, metaverse architecture, and sculpture. Her practice investigates the complex relationships between human consciousness and the various constraints—societal, self-imposed, corporate, and familial—that shape our experience and potentially obscure our intrinsic nature. BoryaXYZ is best known for her metaverse environments that invite playful exploration of digital realms, alternative communication technologies, and the native curation and experience of digital art.
In her digital abstract paintings, Shapshalova utilizes the unique affordances of digital art—infinite iteration, procedural generation, and manipulation beyond physical constraints. Her technique involves layering, transparency, and dimensional play that merges digital creation with heavily manipulated photographic elements beyond recognition. This methodology, alongside psychogeography, allows her to map both physical, digital and psychological territories, revealing hidden perceptual structures that mirror complex world systems.
Shapshalova's artistic journey evolved from traditional figurative works to performing arts, and since 2016, to digital creation where flesh and code intertwine. Her recent BODY AUTONOMY Series (2025-onwards) pursues expressive abstractions through vibrant color relationships featuring pinks, purples, and teals, while her metaverse environments create innovative spaces for alternative communication and connection. Previous notable projects include the LineMAT Series (2021-2023) exploring audio-reactive generative art, and the Metaverse Architecture Series (2022-2023) creating collaborative virtual environments.
Notable exhibitions include YouTopia (London/NY, 2023) curated by Micol Ap, NFT Paris (Grand Palais, 2023), and the upcoming MADE IN LESHTEN Vol.5 (Sofia, 2025). Shapshalova has participated in residencies including Little Bird Artist Residency (2025), VerticalCrypto Art (2021-2022) and (Re)configuring Territories at Narva Art Residency (2019). Her work has been featured in curated selections at ETHBucharest (2025), ETHBudapest (2025), PROOF OF PEOPLE London, and NFT Liverpool, with solo shows including 'Placenta' and 'AeonMapping1.0' performance. Her pieces are held in various international private collections.
Shapshalova holds an MArch in Architecture from UACEG Sofia and a Diploma in Fine Art from the National Humanitarian High School, Blagoevgrad.
